Can you ask your Uber or Lyft driver to turn off their Dash Cam?
Neither Uber nor Lyft has any legal claim to a driver’s vehicle, which the federal government recognizes as private property. Therefore, the companies cannot dictate whether drivers install a dash camera.
In terms of the law, it really depends on the jurisdiction. When it comes to recording people and their conversations, laws are complex and vary by state and potentially by city. In most cases, your driver must at least inform you that you are being recorded. In some cases, they do not need permission at all, assuming it is on their property or inside a private vehicle. In other situations, explicit permission is required, or notifications that a camera is operating must be displayed inside and outside the vehicle.

Yes, you can ask, but a driver turning off their camera for you is highly unlikely. You are better off just canceling the ride and accepting the cancellation fee. Just know that most drivers have dash cams, and I highly recommend them for the ones who don’t.
