How to make changes to your order on Instacart
For the best results on Instacart, download the app for iOS or Android. The Instacart app allows customers to track their personal shopper’s progress and view any item changes. By turning on notifications, you will receive alerts for all changes, including replacements and refunds.
You can edit your order anytime before your personal shopper begins. If they’ve already started, simply chat with them in the app for help.
How To Add A New Item To Your Order
- Make sure you’re in the correct Store page.
- Find each item you want to add.
- Tap the Shopping cart icon.
- At the bottom of the cart window, tap Add to Order in Progress.
- Follow prompts for confirmation.

How To Change Quantity Or Remove An Item
On The App
- Tap View account under your name at the top of the app dashboard or tap the three stacked horizontal lines in the upper left corner.
- Tap Your orders.
- Tap the current order.
- Tap the item you want to edit.
- Tap the plus or minus symbol to increase or decrease the quantity.
On The Website
- At the top right, click Account or Hi, [Your Name].
- Click Your Orders.
- Select the order you want to update.
- In the item list, select the item whose quantity you want to adjust.
Update item replacement choices
In Your Cart (Before Checkout)
- Navigate to your Cart.
- Tap or click Add Instructions (or Choose replacement) on the specific item.
- Choose one of the following options:
- Replace with specific item: Search or choose a backup product you prefer.
- Replace with best match: Allow the shopper to pick the closest alternative.
- Refund this item: Cancel the item automatically if it’s out of stock.
After Placing the Order (While Shopping)
If your order has already been placed but the shopper hasn’t started yet:
- Go to the menu in the upper left corner and select Your Orders.
- Select the current order.
- Find the item you want to update and tap Edit replacement.
- Set your new preference.
During Shopper Replacements (In-App)
If your shopper is currently active and making replacements:
- Turn on Order Notifications to get alerts for all changes.
- When a shopper swaps an item, you will see a push notification and the option to Approve or select Other options… (which allows you to request a different replacement or a refund).
- Use the in-app chat to give specific directions if you aren’t satisfied with the automated choices.

How to see items your shopper has already located:
- Open your notifications: Tap the alert on your phone when Instacart notifies you that your shopper has made a change.
- Review the change: In the app, tap See Shopped Items or Review Changes.
- Approve or change: Select Approve if you accept the item or tap Other options to request a refund or suggest a different item.
