How to add instructions for your Instacart shopper on specific items, replacements, or delivery
Adding instructions for how you’d like your order shopped or delivered helps your shopper know your preferences, such as how ripe you want your produce. It also helps them find your apartment.
Item Instructions
You can add item instructions from your cart, on the checkout page, or even after you’ve placed your order (before the shopper begins).
- From your cart—click or tap Instructions on the item you would like to leave a note for.
- From the checkout page—click or tap Review to check your items and add instructions.
- After you’ve ordered—visit the Order page to review your items and add any instructions.

Replacement Instructions
If an item you want is out of stock, the app offers several options.
- Best Match: Your shopper will select the best possible replacement for your item. This is the default option when your chosen item is unavailable.
- Choose replacement: To select a specific replacement, tap or click on the item, then select Choose replacement. From there, you can search the catalog or pick from a list of suggestions.
- Don’t replace: If you would prefer not to replace an item, choose Don’t replace to receive a refund instead if the item is out of stock.
