Requirements to Become a Zipcar Member
Driving License Requirements:
- Age: You must be 21 or older for standard personal or business accounts. Students or applicants via a university program can join at 18.
- Driver’s License: You need a valid, full driver’s license that has been held for at least 12 months. Photocopies, digital licenses, temporary licenses, and Canadian G1 licenses are not accepted. International licenses are accepted.
- Payment Method: You must provide a valid credit or debit card to pay for application and membership fees
- Identity Verification: You must submit a clear selfie holding your driver’s license along with your application.
Driving History Requirements for Zipcar

Limited minor incidents: For drivers 21 and older, no more than two moving violations or accidents in the past three years, and no more than one in the past 18 months. Drivers aged 18 to 20 generally must have zero incidents on their record.
How to Book a Car on the Zipcar App
Find and Book a Car
- Open the app to view nearby cars on a map.
- Choose your pick-up and drop-off times by the hour or the day.
- Confirm your booking inside the app.
Unlock and Drive
- Enable Bluetooth on your phone for a reliable connection to the vehicle.
- Stand next to the car, open the app, and tap Unlock (you can also tap your physical Zipcard on the windshield reader as a backup).
- Retrieve the keys and gas card located inside the glove box or the console.
- Take photos of the car’s interior and exterior, and report any pre-existing damage to customer support.
Manage and Return the Trip
- Extend your time in the app if you are running late or hit traffic.
