How do DoorDash Dashers Pay for Food?

DoorDash issues a credit card that drivers use at all non-partner restaurants. At partner restaurants (indicated in the app), you do not have to worry about payment, and all you have to do is pick up the food. Drivers aren’t allowed to open containers to check the accuracy of the orders since they aren’t licensed food handlers, but they can still do a rough check to make sure the quantities line up and the receipt matches the app.

How Much Do DoorDash Dashers Make?

Delivery drivers typically earn between $8 and $15 per hour, with total earnings calculated as: Base Pay + Promotions + Tips. Base pay itself is determined by the estimated time, distance, and desirability of the delivery.

Drivers are shown the payout amount for each delivery before they accept it. If a customer leaves no tip in the app, the driver receives only the base pay of approximately $2 – $3.

Bonuses

Sometimes DoorDash will offer Peak Pay, an incentive to drive during busy times and peak hours, like during holidays or bad weather.

Cons of the DoorDash Dasher App

  • You are accumulating heavy mileage on your personal vehicle, which necessitates frequent oil changes, new tires, and mechanical repairs
  • Pay varies widely based on your location, time of day, and customer tips. Slow days or oversaturated markets can leave you making less than minimum wage after expenses.
  • As a 1099 independent contractor, you receive no health insurance, paid time off, or retirement matching.
  • Taxes are not withheld from your paycheck. You are responsible for setting aside money to pay your own income and self-employment taxes at the end of the year.

Final Thoughts

DoorDash offers great flexibility, but it heavily depends on your vehicle’s condition and your local market. While it works as a solid side gig, the reality of wear-and-tear, gas costs, and fluctuating payouts makes full-time work difficult.
